WITH LE FOURNEAU
Origami is both the name of a container and the title of a piece, which was born from a desire to work together – blending both our backgrounds –, and from our immoderate passion for containers. Inspired by traditional origami techniques, we change the status of a 40 foot container from a globalized and globalizing device to an artifact generating new kinds of relationships, personalized and human in scale, involving dance – a driving force behind Origami.
In Origami, dancing matter and moving volumes merge. Through its transformations, the container becomes a theatrical space in progress.
Origami offers numerous possible forms, depending on how the container’s three sections are combined.
Dance embodies presence and movement, minutely progressing, and traveling through spaces and volumes. It goes to the essence, the antithesis of an avalanche, giving spectators time to breathe and take it all in.
Several stages – we name them “folds” – have already been produced:
Origami first fold was presented in Marseille in May 2013, as part of Generik Vapeur’s “17th district, a utopian neighborhood” [an event].
The second fold was produced in March 2014 for Festival Teatro Container in Valparaiso (Chile), offering a first aerial animation of the container. This “fold” was developed in a unique collaboration with Chilean artists.
The third fold was premiered during Biennale de danse du Val-de-Marne in March 2015, with original music by Fred Costa. It is a constantly modified Origami, continuously folding up and opening, and totally autonomous in its mechanical operation. Set on its own trailer, the container doesn’t need any outer machinery or apparatus.
The next episode, Beyond the third fold, will be seen at Festival Teatro Container 2016 in Chile, re-enacting the previous prototype, an autonomous and continuous folding up, with the collaboration of Chilean composer Carlos Canales.
